But what about Miranda before he rose to fame? 39-year-old Lin-Manuel Miranda was born in New York City and grew up in Inwood. He is the son of Luz Towns, a clinical psychologist and his father is Luis A. Miranda Jr. is a Democratic party consultant and former adviser to New York City mayor, Ed Koch. The composer has one sister, older than him and she is the Chief Financial Officer of the MirRam Group. In his childhood and teen days, he would stay with his grandparents at least a month in every year back in Vega Alta and Miranda is of Puerto Rican descent. Miranda’s first name, “Lin-Manuel” was inspired by a poem about the famous Vietnam War, “Nana Roja Para Mi Hijo Lin Manuel” by a Puerto Rican writer. Miranda started writing jingles when he was still a child, and one of them was used by Eliot Spitzer in his 2006 gubernatorial campaign. The composer attended Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. He was a student at Wesleyan University and while there, Miranda co-founded a hip-hop comedy troupe known as Freestyle Love Supreme.
