Daniel Jonathan Stevens was born on 10th October, 1982. He is an English actor famously known as 'Dan'. His role as 'Mathew Crawley' in the famous ITV period drama series 'Downtown Abbey' got his lots of accolades and praises. His has also appeared as 'David' in the thriller film 'The Guest', as 'Sir Lancelot' in 'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb', as the Beast/Prince in Disney's adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast', as 'Lorin Willis' in the legal drama 'Marshall' and as 'Charles Dickens' in 'The Man who invented Christmas'. The year of 2017 has seen him star as 'David Haller' in the 'FX series Legion'. Dan Stevens was born in Corydon, London. He was adopted at the time of his birth by his parents. Both his parents were teachers. He grew up in Wales and southeast England. Dan Stevens has a younger brother who too was adopted at birth. He has quite a rebellious youth. He later got a scholarship at the Tonbridge School in Kent. He got his interest in drama from here after he auditioned for the role of Macbeth along with his teacher and novelist Jonathan Smith. When he reached the age of 15, his entire summers were spent training and performing with the National Youth Theatre in London. He later studied English Literature at the Emmanuel College in Cambridge. It was in Cambridge, that he became a member of the 'Footlights' along with Stefan Golaszewski, Tim Key and Mark Watson. Dan Stevens was also quite active in the Marlowe Society in Cambridge. He got his big break when director Peter Hall spotted him as the Marlowe Society production of Macbeth where he was playing the title role alongside Hall's daughter. Peter Hall cast him as 'Orlando' in his touring production of Shakespeare's 'As you Like it' and it was then that his professional acting career shot up. This was in the year 2004. The production house toured the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon river Thames, toured the Brooklyn Academy of music in New York City, the Curran Theatre in San Francisco and also the Ahmanson Critics in Britan and the United States. He got glowing reviews from critics in the United States and Britain for his debut performance and he also earned a commendation at the 2004 Ian Charleson Awards. The BBC adaptation of Alan Hollinghurst's Booker Prize-winning novel 'The Line of Beauty' saw him starring as 'Nick Guest' in the year 2006. Later in the same year, he also appeared in a role of 'Simon Bliss' in 'Hay Fever' by Noel Coward at the London's Haymarket Theatre. 'Peter Bowles' 'Judi Dench' was also starring in the play and he got quite an opportunity with his role. The director of the play was Peter Hall again. His performance as 'Lord Holmwood' in the adaptation of 'Dracula' for BBC was critically acclaimed. He also appeared as 'Basil Brookes' in the BBC Emmy award-winning film 'Maxwell'. In the same year, he got recognition after being the nominees for the Screen International's 2006 Stars of Tomorrow. 2008 saw Dan Stevens in the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's novel 'Sense and Sensibility'. He played the role of Edward Ferrars. He also appeared in the West End revival of Noel Coward's 'The Vortex'. January 2009 saw Dan Stevens appear on New Year's Day in Agatha Christie's Marple: Nemesis on ITV1 in Britain. He returned to the West End in June 2009 playing the role of Septimus Hodge in the revival of Tom Stoppard's 'Arcadia' at the Duke of York's Theatre. His biggest break came in the year of 2010, when he was cast as 'Matthew Crawley' in the ITV series 'Downtown Abbey'. This series was written and created by the Oscar Winning screenwriter 'Julian Fellowes'. This series was a super hit and became a global sensation. It was also nominated for many Emmy, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards since it first hit the TV screens. The love story of 'Matthew Crawley' and his cousin 'Lady Mary Crawley' in 'Downtown Abbey' was very popular. The role of Lady Mary Crawley was played by Michelle Dockery. However, Dan Stevens left the series after the third season and the Christman Special episode in the year 2012. The character was shown as dead in the series but his exit was not taken well amongst the fans and they resorted to showing their anger on social media. In the November of 2011, Stevens guest-hosted an episode of 'Have I got News for you'. In March 2012, he completed the shooting of Vamps which was his latest film with Amy Heckerling. He also completed 'Summer' in February of 2012 which was an Edwardian romance film in an artist colony. 2012 also saw Steves move with his family to New York City. He moved to New York because it was then that he had made his Broadway debut opposite Jessica Chastain and David Strathairn in the famous show 'The Heiress'. In 2014, Stevens won critical acclaim for his performance in the independent film 'The Guest'. His portrayal of a discharged army veteran who went about on a killing spree in order to protect his true identity was much appreciated by fans worldwide. This performance won him a Saturn Award for Best Actor nomination. His other works in 2014 include the comedy-drama film 'The Cobbler' and the action flick 'A Walk among the Tombstones'. His performance in the comedy film 'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb' was also much appreciated. In March 2015, Steven grabbed the role of the Beast, opposite Emma Watson in Disney's live-action remake adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast'. Released in the year 2017, this film 'Beauty and the Beast' earned $1.6 billion worldwide and has managed to become the No. 1 film of 2017 with the 10th highest grossing of all time. In 2016, Stevens appeared in the lead role of 'David Charles Haller' in the 'FX Series Legion'. This was an X-men related drama which was created by Noah Hawley. The series began airing from February 2017 and owing to its power-packed performance and critical acclaim will soon begin the shooting of its second season. Dan Stevens will next be seen in 'Marshall' alongside Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, and Kate Hudson. The Downtown Abbey star has a real-life Belle much to the disappointment of his fans worldwide. Susie Hariet is his wife and the mother of his children. Dan Stevens met Susie Hariet in the year 2006 while they were attending different theatres in Sheffield. “I was getting my kit off every night at the Crucible doing The Romans in Britain, and she was appearing in a musical. We met and it was pretty instant,” said Dan in a Daily Mail interview. Susie Hariet is a famous South African jazz-vocalist-turned-singing-teacher. The couple was seeing each other for three years after which they tied the knot in 2009.

On being asked to comment on his kids and family, Dan said, “I’m lucky to be married to someone who entirely gets what I do. She is totally sympathetic to the actor’s life. Her own mother was an actress, so she sort of grew up with it,” Dan said. “She has absolutely no concept of the British class system and, after 10 years here she’s still trying to work it out. I suppose it was refreshing to meet someone who had the same level of bemusement about it as me,” added Stevens. His wife and kids are most supportive especially now as he has reached a different level of stardom.
