Robert Mueller was born in 1944 in New York. He was an American law enforcement officer who served as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2001 to 2013. Mueller is a Republican who was appointed by former President George W. Bush and later asked by then President Obama to extend his 10 year tenure by another two years. Mueller was brought up in Philadelphia. He attended the St. Paul's School in New Hampshire and then studied at the Princeton University. He served as a Marine Corps officer for three years and then pursued his master's degree in international studies from the New York University. He later, attained his law degree from the University Of Virginia School Of Law. As the assistant attorney general for the criminal division of the Department of Justice (1990–93), he led the prosecution of the men held responsible for the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Mueller later served as U.S. Attorney in the District of Massachusetts from 1986 to 87 and then in the Northern District of California from 1998 to 2001. He reinforced some existing rules and improved performance by reassigning supervisors and also implemented tough new rules while he was in California. This emphasized productivity and shot him to fame amongst the politicians. The leading politicians were impressed by his attitude. He had investigated everything from street-corner crimes to terrorist bombings in his tenure so far. He established himself as a top-notch law enforcer believing that it was the government’s responsibility “to protect its citizens from criminal harm within the framework of the Constitution.” As a result of his achievements, the Republican, Mueller was appointed as director of the FBI. Just a week after his appointment, Mueller was catapulted to the center of international affairs following the September 11 terrorist attacks. During the national crisis, Mueller sent agents to at least 30 countries. Later in September 2001, fears of terrorism were further stoked by several anthrax-filled letters which were sent to American media outlets and to two U.S. senators. Mueller was asked by the White House to find out if there was a link between the anthrax and al-Qaeda, the militant Islamist organization responsible for the September 11 attacks, but FBI investigators ruled out that possibility. Robert Mueller met his wife, Ann Cabell Standish in a party when they were both 17. Standish used to work as a special-education teacher for children with learning disabilities. They married in 1966 in Pennsylvania. The couple has two daughters and three grandchildren. Robert Mueller had to undergo treatment for prostate cancer in the year 2001.
