An interview with 'The Shape of Water' cinematographer
The film, 'The Shape of Water' follows a budding romance between a janitor and a fish-man in a 1960's Baltimore laboratory. The cinematographer Dan Laustsen faced difficulties when it came to filming two worlds at the film’s center. The first was a world of whimsy and sheer beauty and the other, a high contrast world of deep shadows and moments of unexpected, brutal violence. In a recent interview with the cinematographer par excellence, he gets candid with his experience while filming. The first challenge that he faced was when Del Torro opted for color instead of black and white, as the film was intended to be made, at which point the film became all about “colors, feelings and atmospheres. Another challenge for the project came in the form of the dry for wet process, whereby light shot through smoke was used to create the illusion of moving water. In deciding when and where to use these techniques, and when to go for the real thing, Laustsen managed to create the greatest bits of magic in the film. On being asked as to what was his first impression with the script of 'The Shape of Water', he replied saying that initially he laughed at the concept of filming a love story between a fish and a girl. The story was to be done in black and white which intrigued him but later the director changed the entire concept of colors and the warmth emanating from different hues. Laustsen was asked whether Torro showed him some other films or references as examples to give him an idea of his vision to which he replied, that they watched an old black and white movie together and then they watched 'Crimson Peak. They discussed about the costumes and lightings only to get the feel of the movie. The language they spoke with each other during the filming of the movie was not that a common person would understand. The reason why Laustsen was able to replicate the exact vision of what Torro had in mind was because they both understood the world of colors, understood the same camera movements and could understand each other's vision well. Together they have created a masterpiece which is a must to watch.
Dan Laustsen has been nominated for Oscar 2018 for Best Cinematography for his film, 'The Shape of Water'. Oscar 2018 will be held on March 4, 2018.
