It’s a completely different story when a man is trying to impress a girl and when he gets her. A man plays all of his cards to get a girl to like her and no wonder during this phase, the girl receives a lot of gifts, surprises, and compliments! But men never compliment their girlfriends after they’ve been dating for a while. In most cases, this isn’t because he has stopped loving you – it is merely because he doesn’t know how big of a difference it makes for a girl to know her man still thinks she is attractive. After having spent many days together as a couple, men assume that their girlfriend already knows they are very attractive and there is no need to tell them that again and again. The following are a few reasons why people stop complimenting their partners.

What Are The Reasons Why People Stop Complimenting Their Partners?

1. Together for a long time

A major reason that people stop complimenting their partners is the fact that they’ve been together for a very long time. Both of them may not realize but they become too at home to give out awkward compliments. It may be a weird example here but just like siblings, the companionship has been going on for so long that partners stop noticing changes in appearance. There is an underlying assumption that your partner already knows how you feel about them and there is no need to repeat it again and again.

2. You don’t want your partner to become overconfident

I’ve met guys who think that giving out a lot of compliments to their girlfriends make them go crazy. They deliberately don’t give out compliments so their partner stays grounded. If being a girl, I’ve seen guys with such a mentality – I’m sure there are girls out there too. If this is what goes on in your partner's head, there are few to no chances that he’ll ever compliment you. If being complimented by your partner is important for you but due to this reason, they hold themselves back, try discussing this.

3. They stop putting in the effort

When both of you are hooked on each other, in most cases, efforts from both sides decrease. When you guys aren’t putting in the effort to look for your partner, the partner doesn’t have a reason to compliment you. In the case of your husband, maybe he thinks that you don’t do much for him anymore. If this is the case, turn up the volume of efforts on your side for the next few days i.e. dress up for him, prepare a candlelight dinner at home and appreciate him. You’ll be surprised at how this will increase the intimacy in your relationship.

4. There isn’t a need to impress anymore

There comes a phase in every couple’s life where things just go dry. Your sex life starts to die and both of you find yourself drifting away. There isn’t anything going about that’s worth complimenting. These are the times where both of you need to be reminded of why you got together in the first place. Having entered this phase is one of the reasons boys stop complimenting you. Don’t lose hope and take measures to fire up that spark again.

5. Unresolved ill-feelings

If you’ve recently experienced a set-back in your relationship and are still in the process of healing, chances are that there are unresolved feelings involved. Don’t expect him to give out fake compliments and let him and yourself heal from it. When your relationship becomes healthy again, he will be back to his normal complimenting self.

6. The ending phase

A disclaimer is important before I get into explaining this one. This reason is rare and doesn’t get paranoid because if it applied in your case, you would have already seen it coming and you wouldn’t be here reading ways to make him give you compliments. Now coming back to the reason, when feelings die out in a relationship, individuals drift apart. Most of the time, individuals at this phase are fighting a battle and are having mixed emotions. This is called the ending phase of a relationship and having entered this phase is a major reason why boyfriends just aren’t at a place to feel comfortable giving out compliments.

How Does This Affect The Fate Of Our Relationship?

The power of complimenting each other is underestimated in any relationship. Everybody wants to feel good about themselves and this is partially a reason they decide to commit to a certain person – because they know that the other person is attracted to them. Everyday life is tough and going about it with full energy takes a lot from us but if we have a loving partner who appreciates us, loves us, and makes us feel good, doesn’t that take all the stress away?

If your boyfriend doesn’t compliment you at all, your relationship might go through a few rough patches. To help you understand better, let’s look at an example where a couple has just fought and cooled down but haven’t yet talked to each other. Now imagine if the guy just looks at her and leaves a flirty compliment, ‘you look cute when you’re angry’. Wouldn’t that just melt her into forgiving him? The mere realization that your partner appreciates you give you the strength and motivation to fight through a lot of dating obstacles.

How Do I Get My Boyfriend To Compliment Me?

If you’re boyfriend never compliments you, you need to have a conversation with him. Maybe just bringing this fact to his notice is enough for him to realize – in most cases it will be. Your boyfriend loves you and he will listen to you when you’re communicating about something you feel strongly about.

You need to be mindful of the approach that you take to discuss this with him. If you go into it mindlessly, you may come off as a person who fishes for compliments. Using the word ‘appreciation’ is a better way. Tell him that there are a lot of guys out there who want to compliment you but they don’t matter and you feel genuinely happy when it comes from her boyfriend. Tell him that even though you see all his effort and his actions always convey just how much he appreciates you but sometimes words have a lot of power.

In case of the last reason mentioned above, if you’ve just come out of a major setback – maybe go over that again. Ask him how he’s copping up with it and tell him how you’ve been feeling. Communicate that you want your brand to be stronger than ever and if he has anything in his mind that’s making him question the relationship, encourage him to talk about it and see what can be done. Seeing you put in so much effort, he might just give you the first compliment that breaks the ice right away!

Summary

A relationship shared between couples is special. Men and women both have expectations from their partners and at the start of a relationship, both are putting out their best to meet those expectations. What happens when there isn’t a need to impress any longer? Efforts from both sides decline. Similarly, being a woman, we expect and crave genuine compliments coming from our boyfriend but with time, boyfriends can get careless about this.  It is very rare for boys to stop complimenting us because they have stopped loving us. The majority of the time, the reason behind boyfriend not giving compliments is simply because they underestimate the impact a few sweet words of appreciation can have on us. Communicating how you’ve been feeling about him not complimenting you will solve this problem in 90% of the cases.
